The article on FOX News, which I'm sure you've seen by now, fascinates me, as it's a symptom of the difference between us and them.
Now, there's a certain bit of the mind that rebels against the notion that there really is an us and there really is a them, but bear with me a moment. What we are dealing with is not an attempt to hurt dKos, or dishonesty, or anything like that. What is evident in the FOX News article is a total failure to comprehend that there are other ways of organising.
FOX News is a prime example of a conservative organisation. There is no back-and-forth, except occasionally between leaders (and you don't honestly believe Colmes is part of them, do you?). Information and ideas, which only contradict each other when it's unavoidable due to the refusal of reality to fit the conservative delusion, are handed down from on high for the members- the audience in the case of FOX News- for absorb, accept, and not question. This is what they cannot comprehend about Daily Kos: we're a non-hierarchal organisation.
It's here that the conservative mind stumbles. "But, but Kos! He's the leader!" Well, yeah. Sort of. Kos occupies a position that doesn't look even remotely what the conservative mind recognises as leadership. He expresses his opinion, and we argue with him and each other about it. He makes suggestions about what to do, and we argue with him and each other about it. To the conservative mind, this is insanity; clearly Daily Kos is on the brink of implosion is Markos can't keep his people in line!
Kos doesn't control us and doesn't want to. So far as he's concerned, dissent and argument are good, the hallmarks of a healthy discourse and a healthy community. That's the difference here, between a non-hierarchal organisation and a hiarchal organisation, between the left and the right. The Christian Coalition could never sustain itself under such circumstances, because its goal is not building a better, more progressive future (which can be done under non-hierarchal terms) but establishing control. Their control requires lockstep uniformity. Our progress does not.
The right can't comprehend the idea of organisations that aren't about control and hierarchy. A free association of individuals striving not for a common uniformity but for a progress that may look different from location to location and person to person is utterly alien to them.
If they had any idea, they wouldn't be gloating. They'd be terrified.
