Looks like Lieberman is crashing and burning at this stage. He trails Lamont in TWO POLLS (Quinnipiac and Rassmussen) after leading in June (gee, ya think that his decesion to kick the party in the proverbial balls didn't make an effect?) One of the main reasons why I oppose Lieberman for his undermining of the party is because the Connecticut GOP is one big JOKE. Alan Schesinger is NOT Mike McGavrick (for Cantwell-haters out there, you're stuck with her this election. Support her re-election, and help get the Senate) and considering that two casinos SUED him over his gambling debts, this alone will sink his chance.
Unfortunately, we must consider an unforseen turn of events: That Alan Schesinger is NOT the Republican's nominee. State Republicans see their first chance since 1988 to have a real Republican with the seat, and they do not want to blow it (yes it's possible that they could nominate Lieberman, but if Joe chooses the GOP, it undermines his "Independent Guy" mantra that he's using to rationalize his DINOism.) Jodi Rell has already called on Schlesinger to drop out. IMHO, the perfect candidate the GOP would be Congressman Chris Shays: he has the facade of a "moderate" and has frequently attacked DeLay & Co. publically, even though he would STILL be a vote for a GOP Majority Leader and will STILL kiss their asses. He also believes that there is an Iraq-9/11 connection

Right now he's in a tough re-election fight for the CT-4 in a race against Dianne Ferral. This district is considered centrist, where conservative towns such as Darien and New Canaan meet liberal or center-left cities and towns like Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport. There are also towns that barely went for Bush or barely went for Kerry, like Greenwich, Wilton, Fairfield, and Westport (the first two were "pink" while the latter were "aqua.") While Shays currently supports Lieberman as a way to make himself look "moderate," I believe that if the state Republicans push him, or if Lieberman actually drops out if he loses next month, then he will vacate his seat, and another Republican will step in. He could potentially pick up moderates in Connecticut who vote for Joe but will not go with Lamont.
