A colleague of mine was able to get tickets to the big rally down in Waterbury. I was conflicted about going, as I loathe Senator Lieberman, but I heard Clinton speak in '92 and I still get goosebumps thinking about it. So when the babysitter fell through, my wife went instead.
As a spy.
Her recon below...
She was mightily impressed with Farrell and Murphy, which is great. We need those two to bump off Shays and Johnson.
Blumenthal was apparently pretty wretched, considering he spent the greater part of his speech talking about Lieberman's "package". Not a good move from a guy with a man tan from a can.
Lieberman apparently gave a good speech.
Clinton was, needless to say a brilliant speaker. But what struck me was what he mentioned in his speech: The '94 health care package, Terry Schiavo and differences of opinion. I'm certain he was giving his standard "Democrats are better than Republicans" stump speech, but what he mentioned included many of the things that rankle people about Lieberman. When Clinton touts his "8 years of peace and prosperity" what does that say about the Senator who supports our current President who has provided neither?
So I stayed at home, and this is second hand.
But as I took the kids out for ice cream, I glanced in the Fifth district HQ for the Lamont campaign. And there was Ned.
So I took my two sticky young men and we were introduced. I have no idea what kind of a stump speech Lamont gives. But if we are supposed to shut up and re-elect Lieberman because he's a pillar of moral rectitude, well, I'm not sold. But I've now met Lamont, even briefly. He is decent and genuine. That should count for something, a lot really.
