I was at the Dresden nuclear power plant this afternoon, calling attention to the state of security at nuclear power plants in the United States. Illinois-11 has the greatest concentration of nuclear plants in one district, with the Dresden (First plant in the nation), Braidwood and LaSalle nuclear stations all located in close proximity.
According to the Government Accountability Office, 12 out of 18 inspections that met Nuclear Regulatory Commission standards still had problems, and four of nine simulated attacks revealed serious issues with security.
I believe the nuclear power industry should be held to a higher standard - especially here in the 11th District.
Jerry Weller's spokesman was quoted as supporting the current system, saying that the NRC has beefed up security since 9/11. Listen to the clip here.
Just to be clear - the GAO report is from April of 2006, more than 4 and a half years after the attacks.
We need to do better at this. Check out my recommendations under Press Releases at my site.
