HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) -- Cuban President Fidel Castro was undergoing intestinal surgery and provisionally handed over power in the Communist island nation to his brother Raul, according to a statement read on Cuban television Monday night.
This could set into motion a long standing U.S. plan to deal with the aftermath of a Castro regime.
But too early to say how serious this is.
I have been to Cuba twice, once in 1993 (illegally, as a U.S. citizen) and once three years ago.
While I have many issues with the Castro regime in terms of freedom of the press, ecconomic issues, human rights, I do think many Americans underestimate the support for the revolution.
Especially older Cubans remember what it was like under Batista.
Of course I fear the right wingers in Miami will try to start a civil war in Cuba.
