I am a liberal Democrat working for Harold Ford Jr.'s election in Tennessee. I have donated my time and my money to his campaign not only because I want the Democrats to take back the U.S. Senate, but also because he is a bright young man who will bring some good Ideas to the U.S. Senate. I know that a lot folks around here have had their differences with Harold Ford Jr., and I have had my differences as well. I disagreed with his vote in favor of authorizing Bush to take us to war in Iraq in 2002. I disagreed with his recent decision to support the so called "Marraige Protection Amendment." However, on the whole, he would make a great Senator for Tennessee, especially when you compare him to the alternative.
Harold Ford Jr. may not always curry favor with kossacks, but he holds many of the same beliefs we do. Unlike most Republicans, including his Republican opponent, Bob Corker, he is a member of the reality based community. He recognizes the fact that global warming is one of the greatest dangers facing humanity today He has sharply criticized his opponents for failing to recognize this reality.
Harold Ford Jr. also supports stem cell research, and he voted for the Senate bill to expand such research. His opponent, Bob Corker, said he would have opposed the bill.
Unlike the vast majority of Republicans, including his Republican opponent, Bob Corker, he recognizes the fact that we are actually funding our enemies when we continue our addiction to foreign oil, and he has a solution to our current addiction to oil. http://www.fordfortennessee.com/... His opponent, Bob Corker, who has recieved large sums of money from the head of Pilot Oil, Jim Haslam, has of course failed to offer any ideas, much less solutions. We can imagine whose interests he will support if elected.
Harold Ford voted against CAFTA, while I'm sure his opponent would vote for such legislation with no regard to the legislation's effect on American workers. While he personally disapproves of abortion, he also opposes attempts to criminalize abortion, whereas his opponent flat out opposes a woman's right to choose.
Finally, and most importantly, despite the fact that he is a centrist, Harold Ford is a true blue democrat. He stood with the Congressional black caucus in its rejection of Bush electors from the state of Florida due to election fraud in that state. This step was one that not a single Democratic Senator was willing to take. http://ontheissues.org/... He also came to the defense of Representative John Murtha when Representative Jean Smidt smeared his good name by calling him a coward on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. http://getridofthedlc.blogspot.com/... These facts clearly distinguish him from turncoat Joe.
I know that everyone is focused on the Connecticut Senatorial race, but this election is big in Tennessee. If we win this seat in Tennessee, we will likely take back the Senate. So please focus at least some of your efforts on this race. Thank you
