I'm Tom Perez. I'm a progressive Democrat running for Maryland Attorney General. I'm writing to you today because the races for U.S. House, U.S. Senate and Governor aren't the only ones that matter. State Attorneys General can make a huge difference in people's lives and move the progressive vision forward.
Your state Attorney General has the power to vigorously clamp down on corruption. Your state Attorney General can take the Bush Administration to court for failing to enforce environmental laws and failing to protect our civil rights. Your state Attorney General can stand up to Benedict Arnold corporations and CEOs that break the law. All too often, state Attorneys General hot dog before the cameras or spend all their time prosecuting lower level crimes. A good Attorney General effectively prosecutes crime at all levels and stands up for our rights.
New York's Eliot Spitzer is a model for what state Attorneys General across America should be doing. They should be taking on the Bush Administration and big corporations that are putting profits for the powerful ahead of the people. Instead, in many states, we have lap dog Attorneys General who for a variety of reasons, are failing to prosecute on the people's behalf.
Whether you're from Maryland or California, New York or Florida - we all need strong, progressive state Attorneys General fighting for us. I implore you to not forget about the AG race in your state. Find out who the fighting Attorney General is and work on that candidate's behalf. I know that winning Attorney General races may not be as sexy as taking back Congress - but, it's vital that we have progressives at all levels of government fighting on behalf of people.
