The 2006 Senate races are going to be tough. Races are tightening and the Republicans are planning a massive advertising campaign that will scare the bejesus out of the country. In light of such developments, I think it is time that we take a step back and re-evaluate Connecticut.
Personally, I don't care if Lamont or Lieberman win the CT Senate seat. I also think it is unnecessary for any of us to get involved at this point by directing our funding and attention on a Senate seat that will be won by either a Democrat or a sort-of Democrat. Lamont won the primary, let's declare victory and go elsewhere.
Now, I understand that Joe Lieberman is bad for the Democratic Party. I'll even argue that he is probably bad for America. But is Joe worse than Conrad Burns, Bob Corker, or George Allen? At worst, Lieberman is Ben Nelson and hardly anyone thinks it would be a good idea to kick him out of Nebraska.
To take back the Senate, the Democrats need to win 6 seats. Our best chances to pick up 5 are: Ohio, Montana, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. We have an outside chance of picking up Virginia and Nevada. But we also have to defend seats in Michigan, Minnesota, and Maryland. One state we don't have to worry about is Connecticut.
We do not have the money, media control, nor time to fight for a safe senate seat in Connecticut as well as win 6 more seats from Republicans, and defend 3 Democratic seats from serious challengers. It's time to declare victory in Connecticut and move on to fight real Republicans and gain those 6 seats needed for Senate control.
