Daily Kos, please post about the NAFTA Supercorridor!
We must start paying attention to the NAFTA Supercorridor now!
Politicians will come and go, elections will come and go, but the superhighway will be here to stay unless somethings done about it.
Here are the Pros and Cons(for the average America) of having a superhighway run from Mexico to Canada:
Pros:
1. You'll be able to drive to Mexico from Canada. It might be easier for you to vacation in Mexico if you have a car.
Cons:
1. Decline of US economy and political destabilization brought on by the strengthening of the North American Union.
2. Continued economic dependance on Chinese imports.
3. US ports on the west-coast will be sidestepped and container ships coming in from Asia will dock in Mexico instead to avoid the Longshoreman's and Teamster's
Union).
4. Weakened border security brought on by eased border controls for freight trucks and the highly controversial Kansas City SmartPort.
Please watch this 7 minute video that I put together with footage from Laredo, Texas and Trans-Texas Corridor meetings. You can view it here on my blog: ( http://www.demoprotestant.com/ )
The NAFTA Supercorridor also known as the NASCO corridor is not like any other highway. Previously highways were built to connect major population centers to be used for multiple purposes. This highway serves a single purpose: TO MOVE FREIGHT FROM MEXICO TO THE US. In addition to freight from Mexico is freight from China which will come from ships docked in Mexican harbors.
Bush wants to build the corridor in order to further his agenda of creating a North American Union. The North American Union will mean that the US, Mexico, and Canada will share one border. Trade between these countries will be made easier by loosened border controls. Freight trucks will be able to pass border controls miles away from the Mexico/US border, even as far as Kansas City ( http://www.kcsmartport.com/ )
There has to be balance between imports and exports. In America this has long ago been forgotten, this country imports much more than it exports. The corridor will continue pushing this imbalance to the extreme and furthering America's addiction to imports from China.
PLEASE LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS PROPOSAL, TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS, AND HELP ORGANIZE A GRASSROOTS OPPOSITION.
The problems facing a solid grassroots opposition are: #1 getting landowners on the proposed route together #2 getting the landowners together with the city dwellers, #3 getting people in the whole country together.
The landowners who own land in the tract one which the corridor will run, will be paid market value for their land. Some landowners rely on their land to remain intact in order to make money. For instance those who own hunting grounds in Texas will be greatly disrupted by a superhighway. This proposal won't help people in the cities at all since it will just circumvent the cities. It's possible to get city people to oppose since they're not getting anything out of this "public" project.
