Saturday and Sunday, September 10th and 11th, ABC plans on airing a docu-drama called
"The Path to 9/11", based on the inaccuracies and coverups inherent in the 9/11 Commission Report. Among the most glaring misstatements is the notion that there was no response to the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen (This happened in October 2000, and there was not enough time for the Clinton Administration to respond before handing over the presidency to GW Bush, who subsequently did nothing on the matter), and that Clinton had multiple opportunities to capture Bin Laden, but let him go.
Republicans would love for people to think that Clinton was reponsible for 9/11 before the mid-term elections, and they will work very hard on getting this and many other "Big Lies" out in the public consiousness. Bottom line, this WILL work if we do nothing (for proof, see the
Swift-Boating of John Kerry.) We have a golden opportunity here to change the political discourse in this country, but it will only happen if take charge of this issue
today.
In 2004, Sinclair Broadcasting was going to show a John Kerry hit-piece attacking his service during Vietnam. Media Matters spearheaded a campaign that attacked the broadcasting company where it hurt - at its stock price. Not only were advertisers targeted, but Media Matters also underwrote an action taken by the investment firm of Glickenhaus & Co.on behalf of its clients who hold stock in Sinclair.
This perfect storm of consumer boycotts, investor action and media scrutiny coalesed into a week in which Sinclair Broadcasting's stock dropped by $105 Million dollars in one week!
This type of action should be easy to duplicate against ABC/Disney - they are a publically-traded company, and their stock price has been pretty flat the last few months; any downward drop will really freak out investors.
As far as I can see, we need to do the following:
- Identify Mutual Funds which have Disney stock, and make sure that people call of their investment firms and 401K managing companies and ask for this stock to be removed from their portfolio.
- Contact an investment firm that manages a good amount of Disney stock, and ask them to write on behalf of their stockholders to the effect that the showing of this docu-drama during election season does not provide those with views opposed to the allegations in the film an equal opportunity to respond.
I am frankly not that well versed in finance, but I thought that this was important information that could be of use to fight the "Big Lie" - please, if you have any other suggestions or would like to get involved, let's start here.
