Today I am a guest columnist for the Seattle PI. I wrote last week about welfare reform and gave you all a picture of what poverty looks like for many welfare mothers. I took most of it from my own life, but as an activist I have seen it all and I am telling you Welfare Reform does not work.
Welfare Reform takes children away from their mothers, forces women into permanent poverty and does not allow any escape. The writers and legislators of this bill knew this would happen when they passed it into law; there is no way they could not. They were very busy at the time getting Americans to look away from the rampant corporate and military welfare that was taking at that time over 60% of the budget, while welfare at that time was less than 4%. They demonized low income mothers because they knew she was an easy target who could never defend herself against the onslaught of power, money, lawyers and name calling like calling her nothing but a "welfare queen".
Meanwhile the true welfare queens were in the board rooms of military contractors, pharmaceutical companies and wealthy business owners of companies like Walmart who were anticipating with joy the forced labor of these women and they did not give one damn about what happened to their children who are now fighting the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Well I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore!

P.S. I plan to continue the story of what happens to the mother in the last diary I wrote. I am working on it with other welfare moms. Coming soon to a diary near you!
