There was an article in the paper version of the Seattle Times today (sorry no link, it does not appear in the online version!) regarding the changing demographics in India and China, the result of years of preference given to male children. The writers suggested that a preponderance of single males would lead to an increase in crime rates. But I saw it in a different way.
I've never really worried too much about these trends in India and China; I've always figured that such policies reap their own rewards. But this article got my imagination going. What are things going to be like in those countries in 10 years? I have a good Indian friend who has described what life is like for a single woman today in India. Most marriages are arranged, of course. She says that men are after women who are doctors or engineers, make a great living, are attractive, and also take care of the house and children. The fact that they can make such demands is indicative of a culture in which the men do most of the sexual selection.
But as the male percentage of the population increases, the demand for women also increases, and at some point, it will be the women who have their choice of men--the women doing the sexual selection. And that's when the fun starts. Countries like India and China with deep-seated prejudices against female power are going to see HUGE changes as a direct result of their own male-dominated cultures. This will take time of course, but IMO it's practically inevitable. I almost envy those Indian and Chinese women!
