It's official now: The RNC is going after
Steve Kagen with a vengeance. The primary hasn't even happened yet, but they've picked the man to beat and they've picked their strategy to beat him: attack early and often.
Last week in the mail I got a huge piece from John Gard (probably paid for by money Bush raised for him last month) attacking all 3 Democratic candidates on abortion. It was full of the most manipulative imagery: beautiful, healthy, white parents and their little baby snuggling together. The message: Democrats hate families. And babies. And God. The mailer, for me, represented the same rhetoric filled messages that the Republicans have been spewing all along; security and divisive issues like abortion.
The RNC is also spending money against Kagen directly. They've hired the production firm of Stevens, Reed, Curcio & Potholm to create "issue ads" targeting Kagen. That firm might be familiar to some people. Certainly to John Kerry. That's right folks, the artists behind the Swift Boat ads are coming to Northeast Wisconsin.
Lucky us.
The primary race has already gotten negative. As Nancy Nusbaum slipped back in the polls she started casting spurious accusations against Dr Kagen's House Ethics filings. This bit of news from the RNC should give all Democrats and liberals in the 8th district pause. Can we afford to be divisive and fractured when the full weight of Carl Rove and Tom DeLay come crashing down on Green Bay?
I don't want to see John Gard in Washington, and I don't think I can face the prospect of his sneer on television across Wisconsin for the next 2 or more years. When the hate starts coming septemter 13th (day after our primary) let's be ready for it. Kossaks, please, give whatever support you can to this campaign, we're gonna need it.
