According to
The Moderate Voice, apparently the GOP has more invested in Lieberman than we thought:
The White House funneled millions of dollars through major Republican Party contributors to Sen. Joseph Lieberman's primary campaign in a failed effort to ensure the support of the former Democrat for the Bush administration.
More:
A senior GOP source said the money was part of Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove's strategy to maintain a Republican majority in the Senate in November. The source said Mr. Rove, together with Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, directed leading pro-Bush contributors to donate millions of dollars to Mr. Lieberman's campaign for re-election in Connecticut in an attempt that he would be a "Republican-leaning" senator.
Of, course, as Gandelman notes, Joe is trying to cover his ass:
"Joe [Lieberman] took the money but said he would not play ball," the source said. "That doesn't mean that this was a wasted investment."
I am not sure what "playing ball" means here, but I am sure of something, Liberman must lose.
Let's take a look. How could electing a Democratic senator, even a "Republican leaning" Bush ass kisser like holy Joe help "Karl Rove's strategy to maintain a Republican majority in the Senate in November"? After all, presumably if Joe had won the primary he would have voted for Reid as majority leader. The only way I can think of is if the Dems take the Senate by one seat, not that unlikely as if the did win the Senate the margin would be very small, Bush can nominate Joe for Secretary of Defense, knowing a GOP governor will appoint his successor and give them their seat back. And Joe gets the resume line he needs to guarantee that cushy defense industry job after he leaves office.
It is now beyond clear that Lieberman is a threat to the Democratic party and he must be stopped. It needs to be made perfectly clear to the people of CT that a vote for Joe is a vote for Bush, Rove and the whole GOP.
