Lee Hamilton, Co-Chair of the 9-11 Commission, today joined Clinton and other Democrats in criticizing ABC's PT911 at a Washington news conference.
Pointedly in the presence of Tom Keane, the co-chair of the commission, he noted that this was the only 9-11 matter from which he had been excluded. In every other commission-related activity, both co-chairs had been invited to participate. Keane was evidently discomforted by Hamilton's criticism, but said nothing in response. Keane's defense of the program was considerably more tepid than heretofore. Up until today Hamilton has not spoken publicly on the matter, but he did so in response to a question about the ABC program at the end of a National Press Club luncheon that was broadcast live on CSPAN this afternoon EST. The session is not yet on the press club's website, but may be appearing shortly and may reappear on CSPAN in the future.
The fact that the subject was raised and prompted the only significant disagreement during their joint appearance suggests that the story will continue to grow. Hamilton is notoriously mild-mannered and even-tempered, but his comments clearly demonstrate his great annoyance with ABC. I am surprised, however, that I have seen no coverage of this story anywhere so far.
What other prominent Democrats will speak out? When will George Mitchell, Chair of the DisneyCorp, emerge from his cocoon and issue a statement. The silence of senior executives at ABC and Disney has been deafening. Obviously they are hoping it will blow over, but we must make certain that it will not.
