Why don't we lable the current fabricated controversy in the Senate properly: its about whether we will toruture suspects and then conduct secret trials that could result in their executuion.
Lack of Clarity? Is it possible that we are having problem of lack of clarity with Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions when our people torture suspects? Would the Republicans accept any of the techniques to be done to our troops by our enemies or to them or their familes by the intelligence services of another country?
I can't fathom how our press is so scared that they must repeat the adminstration and the Republican Party's talking points and language rather than delve even skin deep in the controversy. In the long run the simplistic message the Republicans have cooked up that we must "properly interrogate terrorists" and then "make sure classified information isn't passed on" in an open trial will win. Where is the clear counterpoint that speaks to our values and the reasons our way of life is worth fighting for?
I remain dismayed by the current discussion in the Senate and thorughout the media on the administration's determination to continue torturing terrorism suspects and then putting them through secret military tribunuals where they will have almost no rights to see and challenge the evidence that support their execution.
Wasn't this what real fascists are known for? Wasn't this what Hilter and the Nazis fashioned as their administration of justice for suspects? Just when the administration is tagging the Islamic extremists as fascists and anyone that differs with the Republicans as appeasers they are carrying out in a small scale the type of heinous acts we fought a major war to stop. On top of everything they want to carry out phony trials as they have had almost no luck in carring out real trials since they have arrested precious few real terrorists in their global war on terror.
We fought several wars since 1947 and had no trouble interpreting the Geneva Conventions. We started having trouble with the interpretations when we started torturing.
If this is clear even on supperficial examination why can't the media make sure America knows what is it choosing and why the world has lost faith in the moral compass we have used to guide us after 9/11?
