The race for Attorney General of Ohio should be of vital interest to every Democrat in America, because it is must-win if we are going to have clean, fair elections in Ohio in 2008. Mark Dann for Attorney General (markdannforohio.com) is battling hard and is in a good position to win with the anti-Taft, anti-incumbent mood here. However, the GOP is going after this race with guns blazing, because it is so vital.
Mark Dann is best known for breaking the Noe/Coingate scandal, setting the stage for the Democratic opportunities in Ohio this year. More than that, he's a smart, strong, decent candidate with a great record of service.
He is running against Betty Montgomery, a Blackwell/Taft lackey who has been swapping jobs with Blackwell in order to get around Ohio's term limits.
Here it is in a nutshell: Mark Dann broke the Coingate scandal and opened the door for the Dem sweep in Ohio; Betty is a friend and protege of both Ken Starr and Ken Blackwell. 'Nuff said.
The GOP is pouring money into the Montgomery race, hoping she'll be able to be the thorn in Ted Strickland's side during his apparently-coming term as Governor. We can't let that happen.
I've followed Mark Dann's career for several years and frankly, I'd vote for him regardless of party. He can be an Attorney General in the Eliot Spitzer style - proactive, and deeply aware of the role of AG as the people's attorney, not the party machine's toady.
Democrats MUST have the trifecta - Governor, Secretary of State AND Attorney General - if we're to clean up the election mess here. The other races are looking good, but Mark Dann needs more help. The 2008 presidential race is just around the corner, and Ohio will be as important as ever.
