Joe Lieberman is bad for democracy and good for fascism.
This will be my last thought on Lieberman. I have expended way too much valuable think-time on this race for someone who is not from CT. I became obsessed with trying to nail down what exactly I don't like about Lieberman and then I became obsessed with trying to figure out why I was obsessed with understanding my dislike for Lieberman, (a sort of meta-obsession) So I've thought a lot about Joe lately and finally decided its all wrapped up in this one quote:
It's time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge that he will be the commander in chief for three more critical years and that in matters of war we undermine presidential credibility at our nation's peril.
Joe Lieberman is standing there, in his capacity as a United States Senator and telling the American people he beleives dissent from the Leader is wrong.
That is wrong Joe.
That is dead wrong.
Its not Iraq or privitization or the political cover he affords Republican ideolouges. Its his capitulation to the fascist tendencies of the executive branch.
The Leader cannot be wrong?
Are you kidding me?
The leader cannot be wrong?!
That is madness.
I will never buy the idea that criticizing the president (especially
this president) in any way hurts or imperils our country. How can airing as many multiple views as possible with respect to the conduct of this country imperile us Joe? I believe the credibility of the president is not eroded by those who disagree with him and say so, but by those who disagree and
don't say so. Democracy dies in silence as well as the dark. Anyone who would utter the quote above has given up on the Republic and is openly advocating a form of authoritarianism. I pay the president's salary and he's damn well going to hear it if I don't like what he's doing and expect my representatives in congress to do the same.
The Leader cannot be wrong?!
Joe Lieberman has cast his lot in with the no-oversight, unlimited-budget, secrect-everything Unitary Executive crowd at the White House. I have no truck with those people. They are wrong in their Constitutional interpretations and dangerous to a free society. Joe Lieberman does not honor his responsibitlies as a United States Senator. He does not honor his own
co-equal branch of the government.
That's the rub. I knew there was a reason this race has occupied so much of my time lately. The CT Democratic primary is linked to the greater struggle occuring between those who would like to maintain the Constitution, checks-and-balances, the Bill of Rights etc and those who would like to chuck it out and revert back to good old fashion authoritiarinsm.
Lieberman made his choice.
The Leader cannot be wrong?
The Leader cannot be wrong?!
Jesus Joe.
That's madness.
