Stephen Goss, who is the chief actuary for Social Security said that they believe that about three-quarters of undocumented workers pay payroll taxes.
Every year they contribute 8.5 billion dollars in SS and Medicare taxes which is kept in a special account called the 'earnings suspense' account. This account is now over 370 billions of dollars in size.
The money generated from this account amounts to 10% of last years SS funding surplus.
Yet these workers are not entitled to any retirement or medicare benefit.
While remittances sent to Mexico from undocumented workers flow into the Mexican economy at the rate of many billions, Americans should realize that between the taxes they pay and the work they do (they put the food on our tables) there is an equivalent or perhaps greater benefit flowing into our own.
It's a shame how poorly we treat them.
And shame on Gov. Schwarzenegger who says he will veto the Calif. bill to allow them even to have drivers licenses.
