Every day until the election I'm making a contribution to a new candidate, announcing it here on Daily Kos, and encouraging you to join me. If one person matches my contribution on my ActBlue page, I'll double my contribution; if ten people match it, I'll triple.
madame defarge,
Aeolus,
possum and six anonymous Kossacks matched yesterday's contribution to Dan Seals, and
Focused followed through on her pledge to match - all of which is to say yesterday was a fantastic day here at the Daily Donation, so even if I didn't quite get the ten matches I established as the tripling threshold, I'm sending Dan $40 more today. I thank you all.
Please join me below the fold for details on today's contribution to John Laesch and my contribution history.
Here's John's website.
Here's my ActBlue page.
christopher walker suggested John Laesch several days ago, and
Aeolus made an independent recommendation yesterday; I'm happy to put John on the list as today's canddiate.
John has had, and continues to have, an uphill battle in his bid to unseat the powerful Speaker of the House, Denny Hastert. But Friday the slope of that hill got a lot gentler. I'm referring, of course, to the revelations and subsequent resignation regarding Mark Foley's pedophilia and the House leadership's coverup thereof.
To be honest, this is exactly the kind of scandal I have been hoping for, and it doesn't surprise me. It doesn't offend me nearly as much as do the illegal war in Iraq or the deliberate inattention to New Orleans or shifting the tax burden onto the poor or the assaults on our environment and on science. Or the nuclear war these psychopathic bastards are cooking up in Iran.
But Foley's presumptive serial sodomy and Hastert's coverup, and the deep-set hypocrisy that let them happen, serve as a fine metaphor for what the Bush administration has done to our country, what Hastert's rubber-stamp Congress has enabled. More important - for I don't think we needed that metaphor - this scandal will attract the kind of media attention that will simultaneously attract and horrify the voters that we just can't reach with facts and responsible campaigning.
And reaching those voters and getting them to at least stay home in disgust will win this race. I'd like to say it's because John (who posts here on Daily Kos) a great guy, a great candidate, a great politician - all of which he seems to be - but that's not enough to win election in this highly Republican district. Sexual scandal just might be. So let's help John take advantage of this propitious scandal. Here's my $20; who will match it?
