When I talk to my neighbors about the horrors in Iraq, the assault on Civil Liberties, and the scandals in Washington, they tut, tut "What is this country coming to?" I tell them that electing a Democratic Congress would put a brake on what the President could do.
Every time I do this, I am met with the calm response, "But you see, I'm a Republican." I know this response. My grandfather was that way. There are a lot of retired people in this town. Maybe it's hardening of the arteries!
Getting out the vote is the problem. The minorities register, but don't vote. The elderly white do vote. In Texas everyone is allowed to early-vote, which greatly reduces the number of people who vote on election day itself. This year the ballot will be particularly confusing due to the Primary for the Texas 21st Congressional District occurring simultaneously with the otherwise General Election.
