I just saw the new Santorum ad, which features Rudy Giuliani stumping for Rick Santorum.
No direct link, sorry. Click on the video entitled `Bench'
I wouldn't ordinarily take issue with one prominent [Thanks,PBJ Diddy!] party member stumping for a colleague who is struggling (to say the least;) however, this one really bugs me. Specifically for the following reasons:
Rick Santorum on Gay Americans:
From CNN
"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything," Santorum said in the AP interview, which was published Monday."
[adultery coming up]
Rudy on Gay Americans:
From The NY Observer
Giuliani favors extended civil-rights protection for gays and lesbians. Giuliani urged, by letter, to the New York Senate Majority Leader to pass the state's first ever gay rights bill, but did it privately.
"I am writing to convey my support for the current legislation to prohibit discrimination against gays and lesbians, and to urge you to allow the bill onto the floor of the Senate for prompt action."
"...It is my belief that we can penalize discrimination [against gays] without creating any potentially objectionable special privileges or preferential treatment."
--New York Post, June 5, 1993
Now Rudy Giuliani has jumped on the bandwagon, pressing the state Republican Party to release a gay-rights bill to the Senate floor for a vote. Marching in Sunday's [Gay Pride] parade, he has enlisted in the struggle to destroy the family. What a perfectly abominable springboard to seek high political office.
--Ray Kerrison?New York Post, June 30, 1993
Giuliani said homosexuality is "good and normal."
--Ray Kerrison?New York Post, July 7, 1989
On Gay Domestic Partnership:
"I have no objection to the concept of domestic partnership."
--Rudy Giuliani?Informed Sources?New York T.V. Show (PBS), May, 1992
That's quite a difference.
Rick Santorum on Adultery:
Repeating the above quote, in which the Senator goes beyond saying `adultery' should be illegal, rather implying that adultery, in fact is illegal.
"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything," Santorum said in the AP interview, which was published Monday."
Rudy on Adultery:
(more coming, it's tough to find direct quotes about this. lil help?)
From BBC News
"Mr Giuliani credits his girlfriend with having got him through his treatment for prostate cancer.
But his wife sued him for divorce on the grounds of `open and unusual adultery'."
I can dig Rudy's supposed justification for stumping for Santorum; what, with Rove' s (floundering) plan to frame the GOP races on National Security. However, and especially after the horrid events of the past week, I feel it disgraceful that Rudi would stump for a candidate steeped in the sham of moralism.
National Security does not equal the sum of a man's (or woman's) character. What Rudy did on September 11, 2001 does not constitute a license to pursue hypocracy.
Every single plan that Rove has conceived has one principal flaw, which is a complete disregard for the dynamics of an individual. While Santorum has towed the supposed `strong on security' line, he has simultaneously and sanctimoniously devalued Pennsylvania's (and the nation's) perception of true morality.
Were we to cross-reference more of Santorum's statements with those of Giuliani on any issue outside the realm of `National Security' I propose that we would expect Santorum's condemnation of Giuliani and vice-versa.
It's all about dynamics. That is, unless one is an utter fool.
This ad is just an example of the power of "big money." Sadly, it seems that money can buy integrity nowadays. While Rove, Mr. Mehlman, and now presumably Mr. Giuliani have little integrity, they have long arms and deep pockets when necessary. Luckily for us, this ignorance of variables will likely do little more than lessen the credibility of Mr. Giuliani, a GOP hopeful for the 2008 nomination.
