How many school shootings in the past couple of weeks?  Right.  What else?  North Korea has tested a nuclear device.  Iraq is FUBAR and in the realm of world news - Israel/Palestine is...not really that important right now?  I guess President Bush's roadmap to peace was really a guide to how to screw over the rest of the world.

I am really, really amazed at the lack of acknowledgement to the general crisis of the world.  10 years ago, during Columbine, Paducah KY, etc - everyone was ready to blame video games, music, Marilyn Manson, and of course President Clinton for the downfall of society.  The Republican Party has been in power for the past 6 years and...things haven't changed?  4 school shootings in a month (not counting the brandishing of weapons and today's/yesterday's incident where no one was shot).  The last time there were 4 school shootings in a month?  March 2001 (citation).

I know that the elections are an important step in holding the present administration accountable.  I know that too often we blast the leaders of our party (the minority in the House and Senate) for not speaking out - which is frustrating because they can only do so much.  But how can we hold the journalists' feet to the fire, the Presidents', everyone?  When Myspace is a catalyst for raising money for Sudan, I think our priorities (and leadership) are misaligned.

I'm done ranting - but I'm not done being afraid.  My fear doesn't come from the terrorists of Al-Qaida but from the terror of a government full of hubris and ineptitude.  We need to elect good leaders but it's equally important to express to them, and our current leaders, that there is urgency in the problems facing America and the world.  We can't wait, indeed.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Of martial music and clips of ethnically distinctive enemy troops marching in formation with their missles and scenes of nuclear technology in the hands of ethnically distintive workers.

    But who can blame them?

When the leader of the world's only super power does bat-shit crazy things, it is to be expected.

That is why we should have gotten rid of BuCheney a long time ago.

  •  The media needs to refocus with the school thing. (0+ / 0-)

The very reason why there are copycats is because the media takes the attacker and elevates them from troubled nothing to instant infamy.

Time was, if someone did something like this...the focus was on the VICTIMS. Nobody cared who the shooter was. They were a criminal. Not important. If they were killed, there was no attention. Body thrown in an unmarked grave somewhere. Focus on the victims.

    As it should be.

What the media now offers is that anyone who does this becomes an instant, immortal celebrity of notoreity. A "nothing" can become an instant star as the media puts on endless exposes of their troubled lives, pundit babble about who they are, old yearbook photos held up for millions to see.

The desparate and deranged see this...and they want that to be their end, their legacy. So they go out and do it.
