I wrote this diary several days ago but never posted it. After revelations of Bush Co. having no plan for what to do if, or when the Democrats take over congress I had to post it.
One thing that the republicans under the direction of Karl Rove have been exceptional at is taking a bad situation for them and turning it around so that no justice or punishment can be administered. So why would they have no plan? Simple, they don't plan on sticking around!
Here is a step by step plan (exit strategy if you will) to leave the White House.
Democrats Take House and Senate. More seats change that anyone could have imagined. There would be a widespread wail from the Republican mouthpieces (Limbaugh, O'Rielly, Coulter et al) about blatant election fraud by the Democrats. Amazingly the MSM will run to cover these windbags and create a sense of doubt with the hard base of the party.
Cheney Resigns. Less than two weeks after the election Mr. Cheney will resign, stating that the continuing heart condition that he has been fighting has worsened and that doctors have advised him to lower his stress level. There will be loud and shrill shouting that he was pushed. In a move that I am sure will amaze us all he will be portrayed as a man deserving of our sympathy.
John McCain named VP. Shortly after the resignation Mr. Bush will name John McCain as the Vice President. Mr. Bush will quietly and at 4 O'clock on a Friday afternoon issue a full presidential pardon to Mr. Cheney for any and all crimes committed during his tenure. The selection of Mr. McCain provides cover. A moderate voice will convince the American people that the radical right wing days are over.
George W. Bush Resigns. Less than one week before the start of the new congressional term Mr. Bush will resign the office of the president. Upon taking the oath of office Mr. MCCain will pardon Mr. Bush of any and all crimes committed during his tenure.
Joe Lieberman named VP. Some will be taken by surprise by this but the move would be brilliant. It would be painted as a reach across the aisle, a plan to restore the spirit of cooperation to the country. The Beauty of this is that it would mean absolutely nothing. They would essentially get a toady in Democrats clothing and the country would perceive it as a fresh start.
There it is, clear as day! The perfect strategy, George and Dick walk away with a few hundred million in the bank with no possibility of going to prison. There will be no pesky investigations, inquires or oversight. There is a semblance of reaching across the aisle with no real significance. The Oil companies and Defense contractors look back on 2001-2006 as the greatest days of their lives. Meanwhile, in the dank underbelly of politics the GOP can begin planning the next Permanent Majority®.
