Imagine the sinking feeling in your stomach. You have just made the decision to spend $1,016,000 of your remaining budget on Curt Welton (PA-7) who is behind by 8 points in independent polls. Then you pick up the morning paper and read that the FBI is investigating him for using his influence to get consulting contracts for his daughter.
The FBI is investigating whether Rep. Curt Weldon (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., used his influence to secure lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter, two people familiar with the inquiry said Saturday.
The inquiry focuses on lobbying contracts worth $1 million that Weldon's daughter, Karen Weldon, obtained from foreign clients and whether they were assisted by the congressman, they said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the confidentiality of the criminal investigation. (AP)
What would you say to the dozen or so candidates who are virtually tied who you just cut off at the knees?
In the past seven days, the following campaigns got next to nothing from the RNCC's $36 million warchest.
CO5, FL13, ID1, IN2, IA2, KY3, MN1, NV2, NJ7, NY3, NY26, NY29, NC8, VA10
All of these GOP candidate are in deep trouble, but have a chance at winning. I am certain that they will get some of the remaining money. But time is so short: if the money comes, it takes time to produce the mail or the TV ad. And through absentee balloting, some are already voting.
RNCC has made a MAJOR investment in Weldon--to the exclusion of many others who have a much better chance. And now this FBI investigation.
Isn't life grand?
