In a 6-1 decision, the
Missouri Supreme Court struck down a law that would require voters to show a photo ID when turning up at the polls. The court found it violated several provisions of the state constitution.
Good. This law was allegedly in place to "prevent voter fraud," but it would wind up squeezing out the poor, the young and many immigrants, particularly those whose English might not be so good.
I'm a little nervous about this happening just three weeks before the election. Since it's just been struck down, there could be some confusion over just what's required and just what isn't. I hope there's an effort made to make sure the law is known.
Another repercussion of this "voter ID" requirement seems to be that if it's designed to prevent fraud, then voting by mail would have to be banned, since there's no way to present your ID when voting by mail, and further, voting by mail would make fraud far easier to pull off. I wonder why this is never brought up? Could it be because Republicans benefit from voting by mail, and that they also benefit by intimidating people who are less likely to have ID cards on them? Mmmm... could be...
At any rate, this is a blow for justice, and I'm happy to see it.
