I watched the Bill Moyers program last night about saving the internet.
One thing that stuck in my mind was a question about who makes and distributes media content.
On television, maybe 90% of the content is made by a handful of corportions. Maybe 10% is community access channels, school district menus, etc...
On the radio, maybe 90% of the content is directed by a handful of corporations. We used to have more local DJ's, local news, local talk shows, etc... but now maybe only 10% of the content could be considered local.
On the internet, there are millions of people creating and sharing content. It is the most open and democratic form of media in the history of the human species.
The internet allows peer to peer communication and you can generally find content on almost anything you want. You can find local stories, groups, events, etc... You can talk to other people and share ideas in real time and you could even open up a public square for the purpose of hosting a conversation about peace : )
This of course is why corporate media companies are trying to change the internet. Instead of being an open exchange of ideas, the cable monopolies and telecom industry want to restrict web access according to their economic models.
