I read about the narrow passage of CAFTA-- and have gotten a list printed out of the 15 Dems who defected.
This absolutely breaks my heart.
But... I wonder if there still may be something we can do.
You see, I picked up the latest
Plenty magazine... and it said that ANWR is not a done deal after all-- it still has to go to a "reconciliation vote" this fall.
So this makes me wonder: Are there any steps we can take to keep CAFTA from either getting final approval-- or from having any teeth if it does?
Haranguing our representatives is a good start. Especially call on them for caving into White House pressure. Light into their cowardice in the face of bullies (though I probably wouldn't use those exact words to describe it).
And how about working from the other end-- the Central American countries? Encourage them to buck CAFTA any chance they get.
I didn't call any Representatives last night. Why?
First of all, for the simple reason that nobody was manning the switchboard when I did call (about 8 P.M. EDT). Secondly, because I didn't know which Reps were potential swings. I wish I'd been able to find out about this sooner!
Thirdly, I had a nasty sinus infection, no voice, and exhaustion from 2 hours sleep the night before. Why couldn't they have picked a different day to debate this?!
