I posted a few days ago about this idea, which is IMHO a sure winner for whoever seizes it. Dems should do so before the GOP does. Everyone I talk to about it informally likes it.
Connecticut and other states exempt clothing and shoes purchases from sales tax for items costing less than a certain amount, say $50. This may have changed in CT recently, but Dems need not make a specific level or proposal. The concept is that poor and working class families should not have to pay sales tax on essential items for themselves or their kids. We already have a sales tax holiday for back to school items--why not expand that?
This is something that the GOP would find hard to oppose, since it is a TAX CUT. What are they going to say? That it will compromise state revenues? Every tax cut does that. And it's a good way to attract the NASCAR/Wal-Mart crowd that has been voting against its economic interests.
