The
D&C apparently believes in Joe and not in the 60% of the public that feels the opposite of him.
But what's needed in Congress is not an either-or, war-or-no-war debate but a nuanced discussion about how to carry out America's obligation to Iraq while also planning a withdrawal of forces.
Lieberman was better equipped to contribute to that debate than Ned Lamont, who ran strictly to the get-out-now crowd. Some Democratic leaders in Congress have already backed Lamont, effectively freezing out Lieberman, who plans to run as an independent. To abandon Lieberman now endorses an either-or war strategy that pits the hard right against the blinkered left. That leaves the moderates behind, though that's how most Americans regard themselves.
