I just found a new book called
MUTUAL CONTEMPT. The book details the conflict between Lyndon Johnson & Robert Kennedy. The author of the book details the differences of personality between the two men. Kennedy in an interview calls Johnson
"mean, bitter, vicious -- an animal in many ways...Our president was a gentleman and a human being... this man is not,". Johnson used to refer to Bobby Kennedy as
"the little runt".
However, one of the books more intriuging postulations is that while there were personality differences that drove the dispute, the policy differences also played a big part & can be traced as the start of the third-way in the democratic party. Johnson is the classic New-Deal liberal with "The Great Society", where Kennedy represented a "New Democrat". President Clinton's talk about government programs, but with "responsibility" among the people comes directly from RFK.
What do you think?
