A splendid example of the quality of political discourse in this country: by a former White House speechwriter, no less.
His title says it all:
Friends, neighbors, and countrymen of the Left: I hate your lying guts
Read the whole thing, as they say: it does go on, and only gets worse. It's all right there on the page of the
Frederickburg Free Lance-Star: the palpable air of angry resentment; the obligatory mention of the usual handful of "extremists" as hateful representatives of "the Left"; the usual offhand (and minimally credible) disclaimers about how he "really didn't want to hate"; and in the end, what we are left with is merely a vicious screed which wouldn't be out of place on some low-readership hate-blog.
Some more gems (from the intro):
WHEN I WAS speechwriting at the White House, one rule was enforced without exception. The president would not be given drafts that lowered him or The Office by responding to the articulations of hatred that drove so many of his critics.
This rule was especially relevant to remarks that concerned the central topic of our times, Iraq. Having left the White House more than a year ago, I conclude that the immunizing effect of that rule must have expired, because I now find that I am infected with a hatred for the very quarter that inspired the rule--the deranged, lying left.
I wouldn't have bothered to diarize this, but after I read this rant, I looked at the byline at the bottom:
PAUL BURGESS of Spotsylvania County was director of foreign-policy speechwriting at the White House from October 2003 to July 2005.
If this is an example of the mindset of those who put words into the mouths of our Decider-in-Chief and his spokespeople, I can think of few stronger reasons to work as hard as possible to do everything we possibly can to curb the power of this awful Adminstration. Paul Burgess obviously could not keep the corrosive hate out his of heart and mind: we should all be thankful that he, at least isn't around the White House any longer.
