What did John Kerry mean when he
said that if students don't study hard, they'll end up in Iraq?
I realize that this clip is only ten seconds long.
I realize that this clip is probably taken out of context.
But really, where is this even going? He's dug himself a pretty big hole with this statement. I'd like to know how he gets out of it.
On some level, the context isn't even the point. Don't you think a prominent Democrat such as himself would pick and choose his statements carefully exactly 7 days before an election? I can already see the coverage this will get. Will it galvanize Republicans? I have no idea. But if this jeopardizes the Democrats' chance in any way, in even the smallest of ways...
Why would he say this? Why would he potentially ruin things, or at the very least slow down the Democrats' speeding train to victory?
Update: I read the post regarding John Kerry's response, but didn't actually link the two topics because his response didn't seem to clarify things. Will this shift the entire election? Probably not. But Democrats shouldn't drop things into the laps of conservative demagogues this easily. That's all I'm just sayin...
Update II: Kerry has since come out to explain that his comment was a botched joke. His mistake was that he lambasted conservatives in his press release, but didn't even think to explain his comment, allowing others to focus on his name-calling and not the issue at hand-- the comment. Looking back on all this, it almost seems like a microcosm of some of what is wrong with John Kerry: He's not very funny or charismatic, and doesn't know how to correctly respond to criticism, until it is too late.
P.S. I wish I got this much response from some of my other posts, which cover topics a little more important than this.
