That's a hard question to answer because, although their latest report to the FEC indicates expenditures of about $6.8 million last year, their URL rlcnet.org seems to be out of order.
So, it's hard to find out who they are, though the Center for Public Integrity provides a pretty good overview of their history.
It's, of course, possible that the RLC is a bit shy now that a former associate, Allen Raymond, has pled guilty to jamming telephones in New Hampshire on election day in 2002. The chair of the NH Republican Party resigned and Raymond's lawyer assured the court at sentencing that he was put up to the crime by one Jim Tobin.
It's not clear if this is the first time that someone associated with the RLC has actually been sentenced to jail for electoral violations, but a number of people, including Steve Forbes and Pat Moynahan, accused them of underhanded behavior.
Though the RLC hasn't been around that long (1997), one of the major contributors, Finn Caspersen, comes from a well-established family which derived its wealth from the Beneficial (insurance) Corp, which is now part of Household International. Excess profits from that enterprise, as well as Knickerbocker, LLC, seem to go into the Hodson Trust, where one Gerald L. Holm also has a role.
While Finn Caspersen also has business and real estate interests in New Hampshire and Florida and the Hodson Trust is a regular supporter of Johns Hopkins and Hood College, Mr. Holm seems to favor Texas Tech University, as a contributor to the Dr. Keith William Center for Petroleum Mathematics Halliburton Foundation. Don't know if the Sam Donaldson that serves with him on the Gordon Fuller Scholarship Endowment Benefit Management Corporation is the famous one.
What's also unclear is what the $6.8 million expended by the RLC bought. A significant chunk went to Multi-Media-Services.com of Alexandria, Virginia, whose guiding light is one Anthony Fabrizio.
How one would go about discovering if some of this money went to support the researchers in Bobby Eberle's shop I have no idea.
Oh, one other thing. Finn Caspersen is reported to have been instrumental in the creation of Citizens for a Better America whose honorary chairman is Bill Dannenmeyer, whose interests would seem to be somewhat at odds with the moderate attitude ascribed to the RLC.
