From THE GREAT STATE OF MAINE...
This is bad. Really bad. Another reason to get the bum out of office...
(New York City) First the first time President Bush has stated he supports a constitutional amendment to bar same-sex couples from marrying.
In an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Bush said agrees with the amendment because it " would honor marriage between a man and a woman." Portions of the transcript from the taped program were released shortly before tonight's broadcast.
"The position of this administration is that whatever legal arrangements people want to make, they're allowed to make, so long as it's embraced by the state or at the state level," he told Sawyer. But, he said, that does not extend to marriage.
"Tolerance and belief in marriage aren't mutually exclusive points of view," the president said.
"I do believe in the sanctity of marriage," he added. "It's an important differentiation ... but I don't see that as conflict with being a tolerant person or an understanding person."
Human Rights Campaign Political Director Winnie Stachelberg called the statement "cause for grave concern".
"It is never necessary to insert prejudice and discrimination into the U.S. Constitution -- a document that has a proud history of being used to expand an individual's liberty and freedom, not to take them away. Of all people, the American president should know this," said Stachelberg.
