Boy Scout Scandal
If you are lazy, I shall summarize it. Basically, the higher-ups of the Boy Scouts decided they wanted to reap in more donations and grant money for their organization, so they decided to boost membership in their organization by somewhere between 20-30%. Am I surprised? As a former Boy Scout, and as a current adult leader in Boy Scouts, I think it is a shame that this will further tarnish the Boy Scout's Image, but this leads me to my next point. Local over National, the biggest problems of government, business, and organizations.
I will explain after the jump...
Many people have a somewhat negative view of the boy scouts on the left, (maybe not...I just feel like there is) because of the ban on homosexual leaders. While I understand their frustration at the Boy Scouts, I would like to say this. This is not the view of many of the boy scout leaders themselves. This is just the Boy Scout leadership, who is based in Texas...go figure. The Boy Scout situation, makes me think of the Republican Party. Many republicans are good people, who work hard, volunteer, go to church, and generally aren't so backwards. And yet their leadership, seems to display so much corruption and idiocy, and they still support it, because, its what they have, and they have grown up with it. And it makes sense, if you are active in an organization, you help it, you nuture it. You will ignore the wrongs of the organization, because it's YOUR organization. You want it to prosper, and do good. You are dissapointed in it, but in general, you consider this a defect, and hope the problem goes away. This is how I view the Boy Scouts. It helps people, its good for giving boys a good and safe way to enjoy themselves, and it also helps the community. The national organization may cause problems to the boy scouts as a whole. But if you go to each individual one, I'm sure they are pretty much all good people and honest people. I think the same can probably be said about republicans. The republicans you probably meet on the street, who work on campaigns, and who get out and help the community and are active in politics on a local level, are probably the republicans that are most like you. Its those national republicans who are the worst. And for that matter, its national religionists like Falwell and Robertson who are the worst too. Local preachers tend to be the best.
Maybe democrats need to push, bringing the local community back into the discussion of politics over National Organizations pushing to make our legislation...
