We are closing in on the final days of most important election since 1994. I have noticed a rash of titles and comments that are using expletives as attention grabbers or to underscore a point. I think that this is a risk for us as a community because now we are likely have an increased number of visitors to our blog. Our mutual credibility come into play by those of us that cannot ease up on the F word or other vulgar expressions in our writing.
Some people are as offended by the F word as we as a community are by the N word. Dont't get me wrong, I can swear and be as vulgar as the next kossack. But we are being visited by media and possibly others that are making decisions - decisions about voting. I am unwilling to risk losing a single possible vote because I cannot exercise a little discretion for few days.
The Blogosphere is frequently discounted as the fringe or unimportant in our society at large. Contributing to this minimization is our free use of less socially acceptable language. Again I am an avid reader and fan of the MSOC rant - expletives included, BUT my Aunt Lorraine would never appreciate it.
The reason it is important is because Aunt Lorraine uses the internet and I would love to refer her to DailyKos but I would be embarassed. You see Aunt Lorraine would be so offended that she would click it off immedately. Worse, Netnanny and other blocking software would block the site because of the use of F word.
We have important information for the nation to see and read about. Saying that Tucker Carlson S--K- C--k is not one of those things. Gratuitously screaming F--k in a Diary title may drive people away from your important words. And it may just give some people the wrong idea of what Dailykos is all about.
Reading about fellating the PRince of Darkness is not much better. And "bitch slapping" is a terrible image and quite a sexist euphemism. Neither are good alternatives IMHO.
Dailykos is smarter and better than that.
So can we please chill for the next five or six days, or are you just going to tell me to just go f--k myself.
