A Spanish language newspaper received an email from an employee at KNWZ 1140 AM which shows that Congresswoman Mary Bono approves of the term "Third World Toilet" when describing the city of Coachella.

Unfortunately, the newspaper "El Informador del Valle" does not have a website and the article is not available online.

Apparrently the Marshall Stone Radio Show in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area) did a show on May 1 to critisize the immigration movement.  Commentor Gary Stone called the city of Coachella a "third world toilet."

Mary Bono wrote the following message to Gary Stone a day later:

From: Mary Bono
Subject: Re:thanks
Date: Tue,2 May 2006 02:35:46 +0000 GMT

Thank you!!!! I heard some of your remarks with the councliman from Coachella.  You were great!!!!!! Unbelievably great!!! Third World Toilet? That was too funny.  I have eyewuitnesses who saw Roth protesting.  He probably wants to be all things to all people and not act like he was there.  I hear there wer 1500 people. That's smaller than the Desert Aids Walk!  And they bussed in 8 bus loads.  You rock and are so damn funny and smart! Hey, how come you don't send me poems and Shakdespeare anymore? I miss that!
Sent via BlackBerry from Cingular Wireless.

I have linked a scanned version of the newspaper article here.

If there's anyway we can get people to start talking, maybe one of the bigger news outlets will carry it!

I'm having a hard time even finding a website for the newspaper or the radio station, but I will do more after I get back from canvassing for her opponent, David Roth.

Any suggestions you can give (even how to do a blockquote) would be greatly appreciated!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

I know that Bono-Roth is not considered a close race, but I believe that we can make it one if we're willing to make a stink about Mary Bono's approval of the term "Third World Toilet" to describe her own district.

    Thank you!

Just had two phone conversations with a reporter at the CBS TV affiliate in Palm Springs.  Sent him the scanned article from the Spanish language paper, and the contents of the alleged e-mail--and copied his assignment manager.

All the media have to do now is ask her if she wrote that.  If it's not true, there'll be nothing solid to contradict her when she denies it.

However, if it is true, and she says it isn't... the electronic trail will catch up to her, and she'll eventually be outed as racist AND liar.

I gave the CBS TV reporter the phone number of the print journalist who wrote the original story over at El Informada del Valle, and gave the print journalist the TV reporter's phone # over at CBS.

The CBS reporter was respectful, interested, and professional, and said his boss will look more deeply into the story Monday, and talk to the CBS legal department.

(This is a private communication we're talking about, and that gets a little sticky.)

Lots of phone calls will be made back and forth on Monday, and it's hoped the individual who forwared the e-mail to the newspaper in the first place will come forward.  Otherwise CBS would have to present this story as "reported in a local paper" and they don't generally do that.  They want to develop the story themselves.

Bottom line--don't hold your breath, but there's a chance this could break into the MSM if a couple things swing the right way.

Good work getting some attention on this John.

I was out canvassing all day so I wasn't able to follow up until now.  Does it make sense for me to contact anyone on Monday?

          •  they got it covered (3+ / 0-)

I'll check in with CBS2 later in the day Monday, but it will be just to hear how it all went.  They don't need any nudges now--they're interested.

thanks for following up on this.  I was in the Roth campaign Indio office on phones today, and out distributing flyers in Coachella, which is a lovely small town community, btw.

The sense from the campaign about this is, yeah, we knew this about Mary Bono.  The Latino community needed no convincing, Bono is not loved here.

I hope this gives those in the Western Coachella Valley a better sense of the person we have in public office today.  Out of sight, out of touch, and come Tuesday, please god, out of office!

              •  got a call from CBS2 today (0+ / 0-)

but wasn't there when it came in.  The message was please give them a call back.  I did, but the party who left the message wasn't in.  So now I'll be speaking to the assignments manager in the morning--early, before my flight to Orlando.

Hope its good news, like they're going with the story and just want to double check I'm not taking money from Roth's campaign. (I'm not)

I'll be in the air for much of tomorrow but I'll be able to check in with the station during my stop-over at DFW if the morning conversation doesn't get it all done.  We'll see.

I am not certain that it is accurate.  I am not an employee of the David Roth campaign, but I support him.  I found out about the article and I want to find out if there is any truth to it.  Mary Bono cannot be asked until the rumor receives more publicity than it already has.

But I appreciate your call for caution.

The story I received third hand from the paper is that  they had the story for a while now but were waiting to speak with the informant at the radio station before publishing it.  And, by the way, it was published on Thursday, but I found out about it yesterday evening and wasn't able to blog it until today.

      But I understand your skepticism.
