I did it! My polls opened at 6:00am, and there I was at 5:59 signing in...I was the first one to use my precincts brand new, fresh from the factory -- same old lever machines that have been in use since 1952. It was like seeing an old friend. I was worried about the confusion putting new machines in would have, but I guess our county was passed over in the Diebold revolution...

I jogged to the polling place, and back, and I'm sweatin' like a donkey. There really are no close races here (westchester county, NY) until you get downballot, and we have one for state senate (notoriously run by GOP hooligans for decades) which is a rematch of Nick "the buttface" Spano and Andrea Stewart-Cousins (note to candidates; hyphenated names are sooooo 90's, and they are virtually unreadable on bumper stickers and lawn signs -- simplify!) a race that was decided in '04 by 18 votes!! It's one of the very few opportunities for dems to claim a senate seat in the legislature here.

Also, I got a kick out of our village trustee election: in NY state, you are allowed to appear under up to THREE ballot lines, and the filing requirements are not that stringent on the smaller, local parties, now, I voted for all three democrats to retake majority in our overly business-friendly village board, but I got a kick out of the ruling party (who is at a disadvantage this year since they are about 7th on the ballot, not being endorsed by the republicans who didn't run a candidate) who invented TWO new party names with only their candidates on them in a futile (I hope) attempt to retain power despite being unpopular, unloved and practically on the back of the ballot. They ran under the "Rent is too high" party -- I suppose this is a cynical ploy to appeal to the low-income voters in our town, since -- they have ZERO proposals to either help bring new low income housing into town, or lower anyone's rent, but I got a laugh...let's hope it's the last one!

Good luck voting and I hope everyone feels as good as I do today.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
