Should we base all of our decisions on market value?
There certainly are a lot of positive aspects to market value. It allows us to have a trading system with defined terms and values. It is based on math that is universal around the globe. It has the ability to be blind to other factors such as race, ethnicity, and gender.
Market value is great for use in our economy, but it isn't the best value in every situation.
In education, market value says only the rich should be educated.
In health, market value says only people with money can see a doctor.
In politics, market value says the person who can afford the most negative ads will usually win.
When we make our decisions, both individually and as a community, we have the ability to consider many values. We might consider religious values, environmental values, market values, etc... Often, we need to consider multiple values when we make our decisions.
Some people only consider one set of values when making their decisions. People can be market fundamentlists just as people can be religious fundamentlists. If a whole society is based on just one value, then you might have a religious dictatorship or a market dictatorship.
Democracies are societies where all values are considered in a public and accountable way.
The values we consider greatly influence the decisions we make and the type of lives we lead.
We need market values, but we also need to consider human, moral, environmental, scientific, etc... values.
We have the ability to live in peace.
