I know we are all still basking in the glow of last Tuesday's victory and for once if feels like our country has started to right our wayward ship of state. However, there is A LOT to fix from the malfeasance of the last 6 years and patting ourselves on the back, assigning credit, looking to 2008 presidential aspirations, etc. are not going to do anything to address the real problems we are facing. One of the biggest outside of the Iraq fiasco is that grotesquely un-American travesty Congress pushed through known as the Military Commissions Act, AKA The Torture Bill. The fruits of this abomination are beginning to bud. The
disappearing has begun!. Where is your outrage? More on the flip...
That high pitched whir you hear in Washington D.C. are the founders doing off the chart RPMs. I found a single DKos diary on this which was very good from
leevank which garnered a grand total of 4 comments.
Glenn Greenwald posted his usual excellent breakdown of the disappearing of Ali Saleh Kahlah Al-Marri. This is big people, a police state in action. Now none of us knows whether this Al-Marri is really a sleeper cell terrorist or not. Perhaps he actually is. However, the Bush paradigm under the MCA is guilty until proven innocent which you can never accomplish because habeus corpus is null and void by fiat so get used to permanent imprisonment and torture. I'm so pissed about this! How could we let America come to this! How many disappeared do we not know anything about? We cannot let this stand. We believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We believe in the constitution and the Bill of Rights. We believe you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We believe in the right to due process.
In short, we believe in America. Urge your representative in the new Congress to do something about this assault on liberty and the American way. Let the familiar refrain ring true:
My Country 'tis of thee
Sweet Land of Liberty, of thee I sing
Land where my father's died
Land of the Pilgrim's pried
From every mountain side
Let Freedom Ring!
