How ironic is it that George Bush finally made it to Vietnam. Not only does he avoid the original as a young man, but he does it one better, without risking a single hair on his head in Iraq.
A week after our victory in the elections with a little celebration and some well needed rest, I've come back, feeling a little bit like a lost soul with some feelings of redemption and very little motivation to be creative and push back.
Tonight, however, I have become frightened by that little voice inside my head that says nothing has changed... really...
I suppose I have to plead guilty for being only human and expecting some change after the majority of Americans spoke. For the first few days, it sure looked like Junior was finally walking the walk of grudging capitulation...
Yet, within hours, "stay the course" was back in spades... and in instances ranging from John Bolton, to activist judge appointments, to warrantless wiretapping, and to advocating for the "final push" in Iraq, Bush Co. has now changed the battlefield from patriotism to bipartisanship... implying that if you don't support these things then you're not bipartisan...
I guess I'm the most angry about having my intrinsic feelings of sportsmanship and fair play, abused and taken advantage of... I always like to feel that people are capable of change, and as such, I am always willing to give the benefit of the doubt.
It both saddens and angers me to say that this is precisely what Bush and Rove appear to be cynically taking advantage of yet again... I now have to believe that they are deadly serious in their claims that any deviation from their grand lack of a plan will resort in a domestic war to the "cataclysmic end".
I'll take this opportunity to state my humble opinion, which I hope is proven wrong by history. I have to say that I am in complete agreement with the words of Jack Murtha tonight, saying that essentially what we do or do not do in Iraq is self-deluded vanity... there is a civil war coming that the people in Iraq will have to settle for themselves, as our country did in the 1860s... the troops must leave now.
