Flash back to the 2004 democratic primaries. I, a lifelong registered Independent, was sitting in my living room watching a primary debate between the Dem offerings.
As Wes Clark was speaking, I became very angry at the state of American presidential politics. Here was the man who was far and away the most qualified candidate to fill the office of President of the United States, and I knew for certain that he wouldn't be allowed to run.
I pondered the sitting president's qualifications:
Coke head. Alcoholic. Not very bright. Smirks too much. Does exactly what the party tells him. Dad was president...
I was angry because I knew that once again I'd be offered the lesser of two evils instead of the two best candidates in the land. Then it dawned on me:

I was the problem....
You see, I never took the opportunity to help shape the political landscape. There was much more I could have done to promote worthy candidates. Here I was living in Iowa with a real chance to help....
So I decided on the spot that I was going to register Democrat, get connected, and throw all my efforts into helping Wes Clark win Iowa starting with my district.
I don't know if my efforts will help, but I'm determined to do all I can to promote the best choice in '08 instead of sitting around complaining about how I have been once again handed the worst.
I'm going to canvass. I'm going to tell all my friends. I'm going to ask for help spreading the word:
There's only one candidate this year who's truly qualified to lead the free world. One candidate with the broad appeal to unite us instead of dividing us. One candidate with real hands-on experience quelling sectarian violence, leading international coalitions, and ending civil war. He's a recognized expert in foreign relations. He's a member of the panel recommending our new direction in Iraq...and he also happens to be the man who was instrumental in winning both houses this year.
If I have my way, 2008 is going to be different. I'm going to do my share to offer America the best option instead of the lesser of two evils.
