I was just watching Hardball and Matthews called a former Bush assistant (someone called Ron Christie) to task for using `democrat' as an adjective, as in `the democrat congress'. I've been watching the republicans drop the extra syllable for a decade, but this is the first time I can remember them being called on it. It is a small thing for sure but it is nice to see.
I was wondering if anyone else noticed this. I remember reading somewhere that this was a calculated misuse because polling told the republicans that `democrat' sounded harsher than `democratic'. But I don't know if that is just a myth since I cannot remember when I first heard it, and certainly have no verification--does anyone have and evidence for that claim, I would be very interested.
