Given the recent "scandal" over "wolfie" begging for rent and food money here, I offer an additional source of help for all those in such straits. Local help. As many of us have been in dire straits.
And if we want to help someone, it's our choice.

Wanted: Thanksgiving Turkey (frozen) and/or thanksgiving meal items.
I'm embarressed to post this here but I'm desperate so here goes. My
22-year old son is coming home on Tuesday from the U.S. Army. While
he hasn't served in Iraq (thankfully), he was in Korea for most of
his tour, and recently KY. We haven't seen him in 2 years. I am a
single mom, trying to work 3 jobs and go to school, and support my
youngest son. Due to medical conditions and a future back surgery, it
has been difficult to get enough hours to pay any bills, let alone
buy food or even clean the house. Our meager food stamps are already
gone for the month. I really just want to give my son a warm welcome
home with a Thanksgiving dinner. I can't afford milk, let alone a
turkey or trimmings. While the Salvation Army has food boxes for
Christmas, I haven't seen any organizations providing help for
Thanksgiving. If anyone knows of any organization who is providing
help for Thanksgiving meals, please please let me know. I'd be ever
grateful!
Sincerely,
Debra M.

Thank you so much everyone for all of the responses I've recieved in
the past 10 minutes! I haven't even been able to answer all of them!
But I want to thank those of you who stepped up to help this family in
need and I believe we now have some Thanksgiving turkey and trimmings
coming in to help give my son a warm welcome home.
It really shows how strong this community is that there are still
caring people in the world to help others in need. It restores my
faith in the decency of mankind. Again, thank you everyone so so much.

To me, this shows that local and broad area help is good.
Do we have to vet every plea?
We should to a basic extent, but the hammer of don't give, he might be a scammer exasperates those of us that have gone through tough times and now may have enough to share.
Peace.
