George Bush, and Holy Joe Lieberman, have a friend in Ken Salazar - our mushy-middle, milquetoast senator from Colorado who can't seem to take a tough position on anything Democrats stand for these days.
In another of his series of bold commitments Ken stated yesterday we must "stay the course" in the Iraqi quagmire:
Bucking the position of some Democratic Party leaders, Sen. Ken Salazar said Wednesday it's too soon to begin pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq.
Also bucking the 63% of American voters, American troops, a majority of Iraqis, Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, Jimmy Carter, and too many more to name.
"To begin an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, I think, would be a mistake," Salazar said in a meeting of county government officials in Colorado Springs. "If we were to do that, what we would end up creating would be a region of uncontained violence."
Yeah, it's like my first choice vacation spot now. After Real World Denver it's going to be Spring Break Tigris, baby!
Does Ken think the Bush Administration will handle this part of the war any better than the hasty assault, the negligent post-Saddam plans, or the denial and spin of facts on the ground since day 1?
I sure hope not. And why would Ken give cover to George Bush but not our troops?
Even the letter writers to the Denver Post today can see what's been obvious for months: we cannot keep assigning an endless series of Friedman Units to a problem that requires an end time, an end plan, an end date certain (prior to the inauguration of our next president, one would hope) so we can actually fight the real war on terror when needed.
Our nation deserves it. Our national security demands it. Our troops require it.
Be brave, be bold. It can't hurt you just this once, Ken.
But most of all, be a tough Democrat, Ken.
Just....this....once.
