Is Blair really this stupid? Does this seem familiar? I thought going to the UN was one of the last steps before confrontation??
LONDON, May 12 - Prime Minister Tony Blair said today that Britain would support American moves to invoke the United Nations Security Council "if Iran breaches its obligations and undertakings."
The shift in tone seemed intended to increase pressure on Iran not to resume nuclear-enrichment activities that were suspended last November.
America is leading the drive to go to the UN's Security Council, according to the article:
At Mr. Blair's news conference in London today - his first since returning to power with a reduced majority for a third successive term last Thursday - the prime minister was asked whether he would support an American-led drive to seek action on Iran by the United Nations Security Council. Until now, the Europeans have favored incentives like potential trade deals to prevent the Iranians from developing a program, one that Iran says is its sovereign right.
"We certainly will support referral to the United Nations Security Council if Iran breaches its obligations and undertakings," Mr. Blair said.
But he qualified his remarks by adding, "Quite how that will come about, we have got to work out with our colleagues and allies, but those international rules are there for a reason and they've got to be adhered to."
