for its very own survivial?
Why won't the Democratic Senate stand up and block the appointment of Alberto Gonzales, the White House lawyer who advocated TORTURE and recommended that the Geneva Conventions did not need to apply to the United States.
This is a no-brainer. This election did not give anyone a mandate for TORTURE. It is against everything that this country stands for and fought World War II for There is no poll that would show wide support for the adoption of TORTURE administered by the United States.
This is ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS where the Democratic Party needs get have some "backbone" and act like an unwavering, proud, opposition party.
Instead of, once again, putting their tails between their legs, and saying "Yes George Bush we will do whatever you want", why won't the Democratic Party seize the moment and turn this into a political advantage and a club to go to the public with?
They can say:
George W. Bush is a man who advocates TORTURE!
WE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, DISAGREE.
If you disagree with TORTURE, vote with us!!
Does the party of FDR, of John Kennedy, of Bill Clinton stand for TORTURE or not?
There can only be one answer: yes or no
The Democratic Senate must therefore have just one response.
Can a petition be drafted and delivered to the Democratic Senate that says:
"We, the Democratic Party, abhor and object to the unlawful and inhumane practise of TORTURE and the flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions. Therefore we cannot accept and will not accept the confirmation of Alberto Gonzales, a demostrated advocate of such abusive practices. We agree to fillibuster this appointment to the fullest extent, consistent with behavior of a good country, a free country, that is founded upon human rights."
I'm sure many people would sign this, and it might make a difference.
