Now that antiwar people are getting a bit of coverage in the news, the Bush fanboys are frothing at the mouth and attacking dissenters harder than ever. You all know that these cowards can't debate this topic on its own merits, so they resort to lies and smears. The one I think we'll see more of soon is "not supporting the President is giving aid and comfort to the enemy". We have to fight back, and an easy place to do so is in the Letters section of your local paper.
It may seem trivial, but it's a way to reach the people in your own area with convincing arguments about issues. Since most papers are seeking some "balance" in their coverage of issues, you'll usually have a good chance of seeing your views in print.
What I think needs to be done on a grassroots level is to separate the President from the troops he is hiding behind. We all know that Bush disdains the military; it's time to talk to the general public about it. My submission below; please share your own ideas on framing the issue.
On August 26, Anthony Penna tells us that the alternative to "supporting the president, troops and war effort" is "to give aid and comfort to the enemy". This simplistic line of garbage is typical of chickenhawks who hide behind empty slogans while risking nothing in the defense of their country.
I'm going to lay this out very simply for the Bush cultists: you're backing a bunch of incompetent and amoral hacks. People are opposed to this war because they see that it was based on lies, has ever-changing rationales for why it started, and no clear plans on how to finish and get out. People want the troops out because they support the idea of soldiers not being killed in what is now an Iraqi civil war. People don't "support the troops" by allowing their civilian leaders to leave them underarmored and underarmed for two years.
If the war in Iraq is vital to the security to our nation, I suggest that you Bush fanboys out there go and fight it, instead of gloating over troops who "knew what they were getting into". Such statements paint you as the cowards and hypocrites you are.
For what it's worth, the letter I'm answering is here.
