A few months ago I was pissed off because of Rummy walking out on the Senate Armed Service Committee, and I wrote a letter to Libby Dole that went something like this. It was longer and more eloquent (or at least I thought so!), but this is the Reader's Digest version:
What the hell is wrong with Rummy, and what kind of message does it send the rest of the world as well as to our own people. Are you really going to back him giving a roomful of Senators the middle finger, then let him walk away without any repurcussions?
When I read her response, it made me realize how out of touch these people really are, and the lengths they will go to prop up their version of the bright shining lie.
The letter follows after the break.......
Dear Ms. __;
Thank you for taking the time to contact me about Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Receiving your ideas and concerns is so important in order for me to represent you, and our state, to the best of my ability in the U.S.Senate.
In the wake of our continued efforts to provide aid and security during this period of Iraqi reconstruction, I find it unfortunate that some continue to attack Secretary Rumsfeld's character while minimizing many of our military's accomplishments.
I can assure you that Secretary Rumsfeld cares passionately for the wellbeing of the brave me and women in our Armed Services. During his tenure, he has held numerous uncensored military town hall meetings in an effort to maintain an understanding of his troops' needs. In fact, Secretary Rumsfeld has long pushed the Department of Defense to be more flexible and responsive to changing circumstances.
Last year, a powerful U.S. force, its size determined by military commanders, defied gloomy predictions of quagmire, and environmental and humanitarian calamity, by defeating the regime of Saddam Hussein with speed and precision. The subsequent insurgency in Iraq is a campaign driven by religious extremists and members of the former ruling elite to derail Iraq's transition to a peaceful and democratic nation. As Secretary Rumsfeld has repeatedly stated, the real solution is to empower the Iraqis to defend and take control of their own country and destiny. The January elections, the largely unreported progress in governance and reconstructon, and the continued growth in the size and capability of the Iraqi security forces are essential to the fullfillment of this ultimate goal.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your ideas and concerns. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
With my warmest best wishes,
Elizabeth Dole
Yeah, the Iraqi people are just dying to let Rummy know how they feel.
I wonder what sort of response I'll get to wanting him held responsible for GITMO and Abu Ghraib?
